Faith Takes Flight at Gilson Adventist College: A Year of Wonder and Purpose

Gilson Adventist College hummed with the quiet symphony of faith this year, witnessing students and staff soar on wings of inspiration. From dynamic chapel services to heart warming acts of service, 2023 was a year of growth, wonder, and connection.

The year began with the Chaplaincy team inviting staff to a special Agape breakfast. This nourishing start established a sense of community and belonging, setting the tone for a year of spiritual engagement. “Dare to Move,” inspired by Ezekiel’s vision of dry bones, fuelled the high school, while the primary school embraced “Wonder,” echoing the disciples’ awe in Acts 3:10.

Spiritual Emphasis Weeks: Ignite and Reflect

The high school’s first Spiritual Emphasis Week (SEW) crackled with energy as Pastor Rome Ulia’s powerful testimony ignited a fire to “Dare to Move” for Jesus. Term 3 saw Pastor Tash from Mildura share her story, while the year 12’s took the helm with their impactful “Endgame” week. Each day, a student’s heartfelt message touched their peers, solidifying SEW’s place as a Gilson highlight.

The primary school’s SEW, led by Pastor Josh Cross, took students on a miraculous journey through scripture, challenging them to live in awe of God’s wonder. Witnessing their teachers creatively lead chapels in term 3, inspired by chaplain training, further empowered students to engage with spirituality.

Bible Studies: Delving Deeper

 From years 5 to 10, engaging Bible studies offered diverse explorations of scripture. High school students delved into Adventist faith fundamentals, while older ones tackled profound topics like science and faith, Christian values, and prophecies. A heart warming development saw primary school teachers actively participating, deepening their personal understanding and seeking spiritual enlightenment alongside their students.

Taking Flight in Service:

 This year saw Gilson’s first recorded service initiative through the year 9 “Learning for Life” program. Their Warrnambool service camp provided invaluable opportunities to develop life skills and values through acts of kindness. Earlier, students and staff shaved their heads in the World’s Greatest Shave, raising $1000 for the fight against blood cancer. Finally, a heart warming collaboration saw both high school and primary students donating toys to Launch Housing, bringing festive cheer to children and families affected by homelessness.

Soaring High: Memories and Connections

Summarising a year of faith wouldn’t be complete without acknowledging the myriad connections forged through Bible studies, camps, excursions, and events. Deeper bonds were built with students, staff, and most importantly, God. As Gilson Adventist College takes to the skies with renewed purpose and wonder, one thing is certain: the journey ahead promises even greater heights, fuelled by the spirit of community and unwavering faith.
